The heating is on, the curtains are drawn, and there’s still a chill coming off the window in the sitting room. That’s often the moment people decide it’s time for new windows, and then wonder whether they’ll have to wait until summer. Replacing windows in winter is far more straightforward than most people expect.
Can windows be replaced in autumn and winter?
Yes. Windows and doors can be replaced at any time of year, and Fairco fits them right through autumn and winter. The way the work is done means your home is never left open to the weather for long, whatever the season.
How a winter installation works

Fairco’s installers replace one opening at a time. The old window comes out and the new one goes straight in, so each room is only open briefly before it’s sealed again. You won’t come home to a house with half its windows missing, and the heating can stay on in the rest of the house while the team works. Most doors are replaced in a single visit.
The team keeps an eye on the forecast and plans the day around it, so the work happens in the drier spells. Inside, floors and furniture are covered, and everything is cleaned up before the team leaves. Sarah, who had her apartment windows replaced by Fairco, noticed the difference: “They made sure everything was spick and span, even came with their own hoover to make sure that they weren’t using anything in the apartment.”
That care starts well before installation day. With the Fairco Difference, a surveyor measures every opening in your home, the windows are made to measure, and they’re fitted by Fairco’s own teams. Because the windows arrive made for your exact openings, the installation itself runs smoothly. Our guide to Fairco installation day explains what happens hour by hour, and how to prepare for installation covers the simple things you can do beforehand.
Why some homeowners choose a winter installation

The best time to notice what new windows do is when it’s cold outside. Draughts, cold spots near the glass and condensation on the inside of the window are all at their worst in winter, so a winter installation lets you feel the difference straight away, right when you need it most.
There’s also no reason to spend another winter with windows you already know need replacing. If they’re letting in draughts now, waiting until summer just means months more of heat escaping. If condensation is part of the problem, our guide to condensation on windows explains what new windows can and can’t fix.
Summer or winter?
Summer has its own advantages, including long dry days and open windows while the work is done, which we cover in why summer is the best time to replace your windows. But it isn’t the only good time. The best time to replace your windows is when they need replacing, and the installation will be just as tidy in November as it is in June.
