VIDEO: Burglars fail to break through high-impact security glass

13th February 2017 by The Fairco Team

Burglars fail to break through high-impact security glass

Video footage of an attempted burglary in Florida shows just how impenetrable Fairco’s high-impact security glass can be.

And when installed in domestic windows and doors, this glass will make your home just as burglar-proof.

The CCTV footage shows two burglars attempt to smash in the front door of a gas station using hammers.

The burglars repeatedly batter the high-impact glass but fail to break through.

This same glass comes as standard in Fairco’s burglar-proof Lifestyle range of windows and doors, and is an affordable extra in our standard range.

In most standard windows and doors, the glass collapses like a vandalised bus shelter when broken and the burglar literally walks in through your back doors.

Fairco’s high-impact security glass is more akin to the windscreen of a car – it will just crack and split but will prevent a burglar from reaching his hand inside to open the handle.

Fairco have served over 15,000 customers in the greater Dublin region and have pioneered enhanced-security windows and doors in Ireland.

Fairco’s windows and doors carry an accreditation called Secure By Design, which is preferred by police forces Europe-wide.

Our windows also come with the PAS 011 and PAS 023 and PAS 024 standards which certify enhanced resistance to intrusion – and have never been penetrated in a domestic situation.

“Our windows and doors have never been broken into, and we don’t expect that they will,” said Fairco owner Jim Toal.

“We addressed a neighbourhood watch group in Terenure Garda Station and advised them that the opportunist burglar sees an opening and spends between 90 seconds and four minutes trying to gain entry into a home.

“If he gains purchase he will stay on longer. If he doesn’t, he will move to the next victim because he is concerned that he will be noticed.”

Choose burglar proof windows to beat next-gen criminals

Choose burglar proof windows to beat next-gen criminals

The number of burglaries jumped by 19% last year in Dublin’s Eastern Garda Division, which covers most of Dublin’s southside, according to newly-released figures.

Central Statistics Office (CSO) data for 2015 shows 2,290 burglaries and related offences were recorded in the division – a rise of 430 on the 1,860 reported the previous year.

The biggest increase was in Dundrum which saw the number of burglaries soar by 25%, from 585 to 775.

This was closely followed by Shankill where a surge of 24% left the tally for the area at 251 last year, up 60 on the 191 reported in 2014.

There were also rises of 16% and 17% respectively in Blackrock and Cabinteely.

The CSO data for 2015 shows a total of 419 offences in Blackrock, 66 more than the previous 12 months.

Meanwhile, there were 426 burglaries reported to gardai in Cabinteely, against 353 in 2014.

Dun Laoghaire, too, didn’t escape the burglary binge which totalled 419 burglaries in the most recent statistics.  This is up 10% on the figure of 377 for 2014.

Security expert Jim Toal of Fairco.ie has urged householders to consider burglar-proof windows and doors to deter a new, more effective, breed of burglar who has taken over from the traditional opportunist.

Jim, who has advised security authorities on burglary prevention over the past decade, believes that planned burglaries have replaced opportunism for criminals.

“The day of the opportunistic burglar is gone. The new generation plan and execute their burglaries professionally.

“Burglars now typically operate in groups and will take time to drive around an area and identify 10-12 houses which fit their ideal criteria.

“The average alarm doesn’t deter the new burglar and he has all the tools of the trade to break and enter into an average home,” said Jim, Managing Director of Fairco.ie who supply and install Ireland’s only guaranteed burglar-proof windows and doors.

“We would urge all householders to consider fitting windows that carry the police-preferred Secured By Design specification.

“If you are going to spend money on windows, you need to make sure they are windows and doors that burglars can’t get through.”

There was some good news for the region though.  The statistics also showed a decrease in burglaries in the area for the last quarter of 2015 compared to the figures for the same period in 2014.

There was a total of 595 burglaries in that quarter last year, down by 9% on the 656 reported in 2014.

Burglar can break through your front door in just nine seconds, Fairco warns

Burglar can break through your front door in just nine seconds, Fairco warns

burglar2

Burglars can break into most homes through the front door in nine seconds flat, Fairco owner Jim Toal told the Sunday Independent this week.
And criminals know the exact type of weak doors and fragile windows they can easily, and quietly, infiltrate with basic tools.
Mr Toal, who advises gardai and Neighbourhood Watch schemes on burglary prevention, says some criminals can break through front doors in “nine seconds flat, whether or not an alarm is fitted”.
As the fear of robbery continues to blight the country, security experts are calling on homeowners to invest in “physical security” before they spend thousands of euro on house alarms, CCTV cameras, burglar alarms and guard dogs to protect their properties.
Security firms say some families are spending up to €10,000 on perimeter surveillance amid fears of being burgled by a violent gang.
However, experts argue that hard lessons learned by neighbouring EU states have been ignored by the Irish Government.
After a spike in residential crime across Europe in the 1980s, most member states introduced a policy of physical security first.
They strengthened their buildings by introducing specific standards for sturdy robust doors, high-specification locks, laminated glass and strong fastenings on windows to stop burglars gaining entry.
Experts argue that the Government is taking the wrong approach to home security and are calling for new housing regulations to ensure the use of stronger doors, windows and glass.
